The "Uebelmannia Pectinifera variegata" is a beautiful and highly sought-after cactus species known for its unique appearance.

Key Characteristics:

  • Variegation: It features colorful dark/green to reddish-green stems with striking yellow or orange variegated sections.
  • Ribs and Spines: The plant has prominent, vertical ribs (15 to 18) adorned with dark brown to black, neatly arranged, comb-like spines.
  • Areoles: Areoles are set closely together, forming an almost continuous, felt-like line along the ribs.
  • Flowers: Uebelmannia pectinifera variegata produces diurnal, funnel-shaped, greenish-yellow flowers that appear sporadically from early summer to late summer.
  • Size: It can reach a height of up to 50(-80)cm.

Cultivation and Care:

  • Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Bright, indirect light is necessary for variegated plants to maintain their vibrant colors.
  • Watering: Requires warm, moist, and humid conditions, and misting in the summer is recommended. However, it is essential to allow the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Avoid watering during winter dormancy.
  • Soil: Needs well-draining soil, potentially with high mineral content like grit or pumice, to mimic its natural habitat. Adding extra grit and maybe perlite to commercial cactus soil is recommended for good drainage.
  • Temperature: This cactus is not cold-hardy and needs warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 35°C (65°F to 95°F). It is particularly sensitive to frost and should be brought indoors during winter in colder climates.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds, but grafting onto more vigorous rootstock is common to facilitate growth and improve survival, especially in younger seedlings.

Availability:

  • Rarity and Cost: Uebelmannia pectinifera variegata is considered a rare plant, and its price can be high due to its desirability and difficulty in cultivation. Grafted specimens may be more readily available and easier to grow.
  • Sources: It can be found for sale from specialized cactus nurseries and online retailers.

Important Note: As an Endangered species in the wild, it is important to ensure that any purchase is from a reputable source that promotes sustainable practices.
