Trichocereus spachianus f. supermonstruosa is also known as the "Lizard Scale Cactus" or a monstrous form of the "Golden Torch Cactus".

This rare variant is characterized by its highly irregular, wavy growth pattern and emerald green stem covered in rounded tubercles. Unlike the standard columnar species, this form is a product of a stable mutation maintained in cultivation and is not found in the wild

APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS

  • Appearance: Features a cylindrical, often deformed or twisted stem with "wavy" ribs and white or grayish woolly areoles.
  • Spines: Dense, needle-like spines that range from golden yellow to brown, often becoming grayish as the plant ages.
  • Growth: Reaches typical heights of 30–60 cm in this monstrous form, though the standard species can reach up to 2 meters.
  • Flowers: Occasionally produces large, fragrant, white nocturnal flowers (up to 20 cm in diameter) in late spring or early summer

CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS

Sunlight Requirements

  • Exposure: Thrives in full sun to partial shade.
  • Intensity: It needs at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth.
  • Indoor Placement: Place near a bright south-facing window.
  • Warning: If growth becomes skinny or pale (etiolation), it is likely not receiving enough light.

Watering and Humidity

  • Method: Use the "soak and dry" method. Water thoroughly, then wait for the soil to dry out completely before watering again.
  • Seasonality:
    • Spring/Summer: Typically water once a week.
    • Fall: Reduce frequency to once a month.
    • Winter: Stop watering almost entirely to allow the plant to go dormant.
  • Humidity: Prefers dry environments (30–50% humidity). Avoid misting, as excess moisture can lead to fungal rot.

Soil and Fertilization

  • Soil: Requires a very well-draining mineral mix. A standard cactus mix with added pumice, perlite, or lava rock (about 1/3 extra) is recommended to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 mix) monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer). Do not fertilize in winter.

Temperature and Hardiness

  • Ideal Range: Grows best between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F).
  • Winter Care: Keep in a cool, dry place between 10°C and 15°C (50°F to 59°F).
  • Hardiness: It can tolerate brief cold snaps down to approximately -5°C (23°F) if kept completely dry, but it is best to protect it from temperatures below 6°C (43°F) to prevent epidermis damage.
