  • Shape: It's a small, globe-shaped to short cylindrical cactus, typically reaching 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) tall and 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) wide. Some wild varieties can grow taller, up to 24 inches.
  • Spines: It has both radial and central spines.
    • Radial spines: 9 to 17, needle-shaped, bright, brown or white.
    • Central spines: 1 to 3, longer and stronger than the radial spines. One of them is typically hooked.
  • Flowers: Thelocactus setispinus is known for its beautiful, silky flowers.
    • Color: Yellow, with a deep red center.
    • Blooming: It flowers in summer and autumn.
  • Fruits: Red, round or elliptical, and slightly scaly.

Care:

  • Sunlight: Requires bright, direct sunlight, ideally 6-8 hours daily. It may benefit from light shade during the hottest part of summer.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to completely dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Overwatering is a common problem. Avoid wetting the cactus body in direct sun to prevent sunburn.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent soil mix with 70-80% mineral grit like coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm climates, preferring temperatures between 20°C to 35°C (68°F to 95°F). It can tolerate some cold but will not survive a frost. If frost is a risk, bring it indoors.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize with a balanced cactus fertilizer (like 2-7-7 N-P-K) during the growing season.

Propagation:

  • Seeds: The typical way of reproducing, they are easy to grow from seeds. Sow them in well-drained cactus soil in spring or summer, covering them with a thin layer of grit. Keep them in a warm place with partial shade and high daytime/low nighttime temperatures for germination (70-80°F ideal).
  • Cuttings: Pieces of the stem can be detached, allowed to callus (form a protective skin) for a few days, and then planted.

Origin:

  • Native to southern Texas and northern Mexico.
  • Found in dry areas on hills and flats in grasslands and thickets.
  • Prefers black or clay soils on coastal lowlands under mesquite scrubs.

The term "variegata" refers to a variegated form of the Thelocactus setispinus, meaning it displays patches or streaks of different colors (typically yellow or white) in its stems and ribs, adding to its visual appeal. This is a cultivar, meaning it is a cultivated variety, and may not naturally occur in the wild.

In summary, Thelocactus setispinus variegata is a beautiful and relatively low-maintenance cactus that will bring beauty to your collection with its interesting shape, hooked spines, and stunning yellow flowers. Remember to provide it with ample sunlight, minimal water, and well-draining soil to ensure its health and vibrancy.
