Sulcorebutia rauschii f. violacidermis is a small, slow-growing cactus native to Bolivia's mountainous regions. It's renowned for its distinctive appearance and vibrant flowers, making it a popular choice for cactus enthusiasts and collectors.Chalky/white stems: Covered with wool at the apex, providing a unique contrast to the sparse, jet-black spines.
Appearance
· Stems: It forms low, clustering mounds of small, rounded stems that can reach 1.5 to 2 inches (4-5 cm) in height and width.
· Color: The stems are typically olive green, often tinged with purple hues, particularly when exposed to strong sunlight or cooler temperatures. The "violacidermis" in its name literally refers to its violet-colored skin, derived from Latin and Greek words meaning "violet" and "skin" respectively.
· Tubercles: The stems are covered in flat, violet tubercles that form spiral rows joining at the apex.
· Spines: Tiny, black, and short spines are present, arranged in a herringbone shape and flattened against the tubercles.
· Flowers: This cactus produces stunning, bright magenta or violet-pink, funnel-shaped flowers in late spring or early summer. They typically emerge in a ring near the base or along the sides of the stem.
Habitat and care
· Native to Bolivia: It thrives in the harsh mountain climate of the Andes, tolerating cool nights and dry spells.
· Drought-tolerant: Like most cacti, it requires well-draining soil and prefers infrequent watering.
· Sunlight: It prefers bright, indirect sunlight, especially when grown indoors. Avoid intense afternoon sun unless the plant has been gradually acclimated.
· Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry, allowing it to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering during the winter dormancy period.
· Soil: Use well-draining cactus and succulent soil with added mineral grit like coarse sand, pumice, or perlite.
· Cold Hardiness: It can tolerate brief dips to 40°F (4°C) but needs protection from frost. Some forms are more cold hardy than others.
· Propagation: It can be propagated from seeds or by detaching and replanting the offsets or "pups" that grow from the base of the mother plant.
