Stenocactus multicostatus, also known as the Brain Cactus or Echinofossulocactus multicostatus, is a small, globular cactus characterized by its numerous, thin, wavy ribs and bright yellow variegation. It's native to Mexico and is known for its unique, brain-like appearance.
Key Characteristics:
- Ribs: It has many (80-100 or more) thin, wavy ribs, giving it the "brain cactus" name.
- Size: It is a small cactus, typically growing to 2.5 inches in height.
- Spines: It has white spines that are arranged along the ribs.
- Flowers: It can produce white, pink, or purple flowers, often in the spring.
- Origin: Native to Mexico, particularly the states of Coahuila, Chihuahua, and Durango.
- Habitat: Found in high, dry, grassy meadowlands, often hiding in rocky soil during droughts.
Care:
- Light: Prefers full sun to light shade.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
- Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.
- Fertilizing: A balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer can be used during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Hardiness: Zones 9b to 11.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets.
