This is a specific cultivar of the Myrtillocactus geometrizans, also known as the Blue Candle Cactus. The 'Rainbow' cultivar is highly sought after for its variegated stems, which exhibit a blend of blues, greens, and sometimes pinks or purples. The variegation becomes more intense with ample sunlight.

Description:

  • This is a large, healthy specimen with variegation that intensifies with sunlight.
  • It's a rare and captivating succulent with a unique and whimsical appearance.
  • It is known for its columnar growth habit.
  • It can be quite tall, reaching heights of up to 20 feet in its natural habitat, with a thick trunk and multiple branches.

Growing Conditions and Care:

  • Light: Prefers direct sunlight, which enhances its variegation. It can tolerate bright, indirect light, but this may cause the variegation to fade.
  • Water: Water infrequently, only when the soil is completely dry, and avoid watering during its winter dormancy. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, which can be improved with perlite or small rocks for enhanced drainage.
  • Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and needs protection from frost and temperatures below 50°F. While it can tolerate short periods at 25°F, prolonged frost can be harmful.
  • Hardiness Zones: Suitable for Zones 9a – 11b.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season with a cactus-specific fertilizer, but do not fertilize in winter.
  • Dormancy: Enters dormancy in winter.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings during the summer.
  • Pests: Can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale, which can be treated and prevented with 70% Isopropyl alcohol.
  • Toxicity: It is not known to be toxic to humans or animals.

Other Interesting Facts:

  • Also known as the Blue Candle Cactus or Blue Myrtle Cactus.
  • The 'Rainbow' cultivar is noted for its variegation, displaying different colored patches or streaks.
  • It may produce small white flowers in the spring, which can develop into small, bluish, edible berry-like fruits.
  • This is a fast-growing cactus that can reach its full height within 10 to 20 years in optimal conditions.

In summary, the Myrtillocactus geometrizans variegata cv. 'Rainbow' is a distinctive and relatively easy-to-care-for cactus. To maintain its vibrant color and health, ensure it receives ample direct sunlight, is planted in well-draining soil, and is watered infrequently.
