Puna bonnieae (Maihueniopsis bonnieae) is one of the most fascinating high-altitude cacti from the Andes of northwestern Argentina, prized for its dense, pinecone-like stems that gradually develop into extraordinary sculptural mounds. Growing naturally across the harsh puna grasslands at elevations exceeding 10,000 feet, this remarkable species endures intense sunlight, freezing nights, powerful winds, and prolonged drought with remarkable resilience. Each small segment is tightly covered with overlapping tubercles, creating a texture unlike almost any other cactus in cultivation. Over time, mature plants develop sprawling cushions composed of hundreds of individual heads, each contributing to an increasingly intricate living sculpture. Care Instructions

Bright light to full sun. In extremely hot climates, provide light afternoon protection during peak summer heat.

Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry completely before watering again. Keep nearly dry during winter dormancy.

Requires an extremely fast-draining mineral cactus mix with excellent drainage.

Very tolerant of cold when kept dry. Protect from prolonged freezing in wet conditions.

Low humidity with excellent air circulation is preferred.
