Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is a striking columnar cactus, native to Brazil, prized for its dramatic appearance and adaptability to arid conditions.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance: Features vibrant blue-green, ribbed, cylindrical stems adorned with fine hairs and sharp, golden spines. The stems grow upright, forming a columnar structure, and can reach impressive heights of up to 15 feet when mature.
- Woolly Appearance: The stems are often covered with distinctive white or gray woolly hairs.
- Flowers: Produces tubular, creamy white flowers with a sweet fragrance in the summer months, attracting nighttime pollinators like bats and moths.
- Habitat: Naturally found in subtropical or tropical dry forests, shrublands, and rocky areas in Brazil. It thrives in warm, arid climates and is suitable for USDA zones 10-11 when grown outdoors.
- Threatened Status: Unfortunately, it is threatened by habitat loss in its native range.
Cultivation and Care:
- Sunlight: Requires full sunlight, needing at least 6-8 hours of direct light daily.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant and best grown in dry conditions, requiring infrequent watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Water thoroughly during the growing season (spring and summer) and allow the soil to completely dry out before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during the winter months.
- Soil: Thrives in well-draining cactus mix or sandy soil.
- Fertilization: Can be fertilized with a diluted cactus fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing during winter dormancy.
- Temperature: Prefers warm and dry conditions, tolerating temperatures ranging from 5°C to 40°C. Optimal growth occurs between 60-85°F.
- Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or cuttings.
Note: While Pilosocereus fulvilanatus is a favorite among cactus enthusiasts due to its striking appearance and ease of care, it is considered rare in cultivation.
