🌵
Pachypodium lamerei, commonly known as the Madagascar Palm, is a distinctive succulent tree native to Madagascar, where it grows in dry forests and arid landscapes. Despite its palm-like appearance, it is not a true palm but a member of the Apocynaceae family, adapted to survive periods of drought through its thick water-storing stem.
The crested form, known as cristata, occurs when the normal growing point changes into a widened growth line, creating sculptural fans, folds, waves, and unpredictable branching patterns instead of a single upright trunk.
This particular specimen displays a dramatic mature crest with multiple flowing growth points, creating an intricate form that resembles weathered coral, ancient desert wood, or a naturally carved sculpture.
Collectors prize crested Pachypodium for their individuality — no two specimens develop the same structure. Over time, the ridges expand, twist, and layer upon themselves, creating increasingly complex architectural forms.
Unlike standard Madagascar Palms that grow primarily upward, cristate forms grow as living sculptures, each shaped by years of slow and unusual development.
A cherished collector succulent prized for its:
• rare crested growth mutation
• dramatic fan-shaped architecture
• silvery textured stems
• strong sculptural presence
• Madagascar origin
• completely unique growth pattern
A beautiful example of how nature transforms a familiar species into something entirely unexpected — a one-of-one living sculpture.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, healthy coloration, and strong spine development. Acclimate gradually when moving into more intense exposure.
💧 Water
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water more regularly during active warm-season growth, then reduce significantly during cooler months when growth slows.
🪨 Soil
Requires a fast-draining mineral-rich cactus and succulent mix. Pumice, lava rock, coarse sand, and other gritty amendments help protect the root system.
🌡️ Temperature
Protect from frost. Prefers warm temperatures and thrives in heat with excellent airflow.
🌬️ Humidity
Prefers dry conditions. Avoid prolonged moisture around the base or crest.
📈 Growth Habit
Slow-growing crested succulent tree. The fan-shaped growth will continue expanding and developing additional folds and sculptural character over time.
✍️ Special Note
Each crested Pachypodium is naturally unique. The unusual growth pattern cannot be replicated, making every mature specimen an individual piece of living art.
