Myrtillocalycium cv. 'Polyp' is a fascinating and unique cactus that is a graft chimera, meaning it's a combination of two different cacti grafted together. It's a cross between a Myrtillocactus cochal and a Gymnocalycium cv. Red Hibotan. The "Polyp" name comes from the lumpy appearance of the plant, which resembles a polyp.
Key Characteristics:
- Unusual Appearance: It's a colorful red and green columnar cactus with a unique and somewhat unstable growth pattern.
- Graft Chimera: It's a combination of two different species, which makes it somewhat unstable and prone to reverting to the original red Gymnocalycium shoots.
- Unstable Nature: The red parts, lacking chlorophyll, need the green Myrtillocactus base to survive.
- Sterile: Being a genetic mutation, it's sterile and can only be propagated asexually (through cuttings or grafting).
Care Tips:
- Light: Start in light shade when young and transition to a brighter spot as it matures.
- Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix with gravel added for drainage. It prefers a slightly richer organic content than other cacti.
- Watering: Water regularly in summer, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and stop completely in winter.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly, about once a year during the growing season (April-September) with a well-balanced cactus fertilizer.
- Repotting: Repot every year or two, or when the plant outgrows its pot.
Important Note: The red areas of the "Polyp" lack chlorophyll and rely on the green rootstock for survival. This makes it crucial to provide proper care to ensure the entire plant thrives.
