Myrtillocalycium cv. 'Polyp' is a fascinating and unique cactus that is a graft chimera, meaning it's a combination of two different cacti grafted together. It's a cross between a Myrtillocactus cochal and a Gymnocalycium cv. Red Hibotan. The "Polyp" name comes from the lumpy appearance of the plant, which resembles a polyp.

Key Characteristics:
  • Unusual Appearance: It's a colorful red and green columnar cactus with a unique and somewhat unstable growth pattern.
  • Graft Chimera: It's a combination of two different species, which makes it somewhat unstable and prone to reverting to the original red Gymnocalycium shoots.
  • Unstable Nature: The red parts, lacking chlorophyll, need the green Myrtillocactus base to survive.
  • Sterile: Being a genetic mutation, it's sterile and can only be propagated asexually (through cuttings or grafting).
Care Tips:
  • Light: Start in light shade when young and transition to a brighter spot as it matures.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix with gravel added for drainage. It prefers a slightly richer organic content than other cacti.
  • Watering: Water regularly in summer, but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and stop completely in winter.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly, about once a year during the growing season (April-September) with a well-balanced cactus fertilizer.
  • Repotting: Repot every year or two, or when the plant outgrows its pot.

Important Note: The red areas of the "Polyp" lack chlorophyll and rely on the green Myrtillocactus rootstock for survival. This makes it crucial to provide proper care to ensure the entire plant thrives.
