Few cactus specimens offer such an extraordinary combination of color, texture, and sculptural complexity as this remarkable grafted composition. The magnificent Myrtillocactus geometrizans variegata monstrose cv. ‘Fred’ displays an elaborate arrangement of deeply folded, fan-shaped crests, their surfaces rippling into dense, irregular formations. Brilliant yellow-green variegation moves through the darker emerald tissue in unpredictable patterns, emphasizing the remarkable contours of each growth.

Above this architectural foundation sits Mammillaria carmenae, forming a spectacular cluster of rounded heads covered in fine, radiating spines. Their soft ivory, cream, and golden coloration creates an extraordinary contrast with the glossy green and yellow crests below. The Mammillaria's intricate, almost floral arrangement of spines introduces a completely different texture, giving the composition an unusual balance of delicacy and exuberance.

At approximately 17 inches tall and 10 inches wide, this is a substantial collector specimen with a commanding presence. Its multiple crested branches rise and spread in different directions, creating a remarkably dimensional silhouette. Some display broad, undulating fans, while others form tightly compressed, convoluted folds. The pronounced variegation adds another layer of complexity, ensuring that no two sections of this plant appear quite alike.

☀️ Light

Provide very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sun, preferably in the morning. Strong filtered light is especially beneficial for maintaining healthy growth and variegation. Protect the yellow-variegated sections from intense afternoon sunlight, as tissue with reduced chlorophyll can be more susceptible to scorching. Acclimate gradually when moving the plant into brighter conditions.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the substrate to dry completely or nearly completely before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months. Because this is a grafted composition, avoid prolonged moisture around the graft union and lower stem. Never allow the container to stand in water.

🪨 Soil

Use a highly porous, fast-draining cactus mixture with substantial mineral content. Pumice, lava rock, coarse grit, and similar materials provide excellent drainage and aeration. A small amount of organic material may be incorporated to support active growth. A sturdy container with generous drainage is important for accommodating the specimen's considerable height and weight.

🌡️ Temperature

Warm, dry growing conditions are ideal. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, particularly when the substrate is moist. Maintaining temperatures above approximately 50°F (10°C) is a prudent approach for this unusual grafted specimen. Avoid abrupt temperature changes and extended exposure to cold, wet conditions.

🌬️ Humidity

Low to moderate humidity is preferable, accompanied by excellent air circulation. Avoid persistently damp, stagnant conditions, particularly around the densely folded crested growth and the graft union.

📈 Growth Habit

The Myrtillocactus geometrizans ‘Fred’ component exhibits pronounced monstrose and crested growth, producing irregularly folded, ribbed, and fan-shaped structures rather than conventional upright cactus columns. Its variegation creates striking areas of yellow and green tissue. The Mammillaria carmenae component forms clustered, rounded heads densely covered in fine radial spines. Growth rates and development can vary considerably among the different portions of a grafted specimen.

✍️ Special Note

This is a complex, established grafted cactus composition requiring thoughtful handling. Protect the graft union from physical damage and avoid unnecessary manipulation of the densely clustered upper growth. The heavily variegated portions may be more sensitive to intense sunlight than ordinary green cactus tissue.

Due to the specimen's substantial size, unusual architecture, and delicate grafted components, careful packing and handling will be particularly important. It will be shipped bare root, without the decorative pottery shown.

Why It Stands Out

  • Extraordinary one-of-a-kind grafted composition combining two dramatically different cactus forms.

  • Massive crested and monstrose ‘Fred’ growth with deeply folded, sculptural formations.

  • Beautiful green and yellow variegation distributed throughout the elaborate crested structure.

  • Spectacular Mammillaria carmenae cluster with fine ivory, cream, and golden spines.

  • Approximately 17 inches tall × 10 inches wide, giving the specimen substantial scale.

  • Multiple prominent crested branches, creating exceptional depth and visual complexity.

  • Remarkable contrast in texture, from glossy, folded green tissue to densely spined Mammillaria heads.

  • The exact specimen photographed, not a representative plant.

  • Presented in Tide Ridge Basin No. 71, a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic vessel available separately.

Collector Notes

Crested and monstrose cacti have long fascinated collectors because their unusual growth patterns transform familiar botanical structures into something entirely different. In Myrtillocactus geometrizans cv. ‘Fred’, the conventional columnar architecture of the species gives way to irregular, convoluted formations that can resemble folded fabric, coral, or intricately carved stone. The addition of variegation makes these structures even more visually compelling, as yellow and green pigments trace the ridges, valleys, and undulating surfaces of the plant.

This specimen is especially remarkable for the abundance and variety of its crested growth. The individual branches exhibit different degrees of folding and compression, with broad fans rising alongside tightly clustered formations. Some sections are predominantly green, while others display generous streaks and patches of yellow. The overall effect is richly layered, with a sense of movement that changes as the specimen is viewed from different angles.

The addition of Mammillaria carmenae makes this an even more unusual botanical composition. Its softly colored, densely spined heads introduce an entirely different visual language above the bold, architectural forms of the Myrtillocactus. The relationship between these two cacti is what makes the specimen so memorable: one component is intricate, rounded, and almost featherlike, while the other is expansive, folded, and boldly sculptural.

For the serious collector, this is far more than an example of variegation or crested growth. It is a mature, visually complex grafted composition combining multiple desirable characteristics in one specimen. Its impressive proportions, striking coloration, and unusual botanical architecture make it a particularly distinctive addition to a collection devoted to exceptional cacti and horticultural curiosities.
