This uniquely shaped cactus is a Japanese cultivar of the Mexican Myrtillocactus geometrizans, also known as the Blue Candle Cactus. It's nicknamed the "Boobie Cactus" or "Breast Cactus" because of its distinctive tubercles (bumps) and ribs that resemble the female anatomy. This unusual form makes it highly sought after by cactus collectors and enthusiasts.
Here's what you need to know about caring for and understanding this fascinating plant:
Key characteristics
· Appearance: Blue-green stems with pronounced ribs and tubercles (bumps) that give it a unique, somewhat humorous appearance.
· Size: Can grow to impressive heights, reaching up to 20 feet (6 meters) outdoors in favorable conditions, though it's typically much smaller when cultivated indoors.
· Flowers: Small, greenish-white flowers may appear in the summer months.
· Fruit: Edible, dark red, oblong berries with a sweet flavor.
Growing conditions and care
· Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. If grown indoors, a south-facing window is ideal. Younger plants may benefit from some shade protection from intense afternoon sun.
· Watering: Drought-tolerant and requires infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In warmer months, water thoroughly and let the soil dry completely before watering again. During winter, reduce watering significantly, or cut it back entirely.
· Soil: Requires a well-draining, gritty mix. A cactus potting mix amended with sand, perlite, or pumice is suitable.
· Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures (between 60°F and 80°F or 18°C and 29°C) and should be protected from frost and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
· Humidity: Tolerates typical household humidity levels (40-60%). Excessive humidity should be avoided to prevent fungal diseases or rot.
· Fertilizer: Fertilize during the active growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength, once a month or every 2-4 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the winter dormant period.
· Propagation: Can be propagated from stem cuttings. Allow the cut surface to callus for a few days before planting in well-draining soil.
Additional notes
· The name "Fukurokuryuzinboku" translates to fortune, fief/happy, dragon, Shinto god/spirit, and tree, and it was named after two of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology.
· This cultivar is considered somewhat rare due to its unique appearance, limited distribution, and slow growth rate, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
· It's important to handle this cactus with care due to its sharp spines.
