Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristatus variegata cv. ‘Fred’ is one of the most unusual and highly collectible forms of Myrtillocactus. Unlike the upright growth of the standard species, ‘Fred’ develops unpredictable crested, fan-like formations with sculptural folds and waves. This variegated form adds layers of blue-green, yellow, and cream coloration, making every specimen completely unique — a living piece of natural sculpture.
🌵 Care Instructions
☀️ Light:
Provide bright, indirect light to full sun. Strong light helps maintain compact growth and brings out the beautiful blue tones and variegated coloring. Acclimate slowly when increasing sun exposure.
💧 Water:
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water deeply during active growth seasons and reduce significantly during winter dormancy.
🌱 Soil:
Plant in a very fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of mineral content such as pumice, lava rock, or perlite. Avoid moisture-retentive soils.
🌡️ Temperature:
Protect from frost and extended cold. Best grown in warm, dry conditions and protected below approximately 40°F.
✨ Why It Stands Out:
‘Fred’ is prized by collectors for its unpredictable growth, coral-like crests, and painterly variegation. No two plants develop the same form — each specimen grows into its own twisting landscape of folds, ridges, and color. Mature pieces become true centerpiece plants.
