This is a beautiful and sought-after cactus variety known for its unique crested or fanning growth pattern.
Key Characteristics:
- Appearance: Features a distinct crested form with wavy, undulating ridges along its stems, giving it a sculptural look. It typically displays a blue-green color.
- Growth: Grows slowly and can get quite large. The crested form is a result of a mutation causing abnormal cell division in the growth apex.
- Origin: Native to Mexico.
- Flowers: Produces small, greenish-white to cream-colored flowers.
- Fruit: Develops small, edible, plum-like fruits called garambullos.
- Hardiness: Generally recommended for USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Thrives in bright, direct sunlight. Can tolerate some indirect light, especially during winter.
- Water: Prefers to stay dry. Water only when the soil has completely dried out. Overwatering can lead to root rot. Reduce watering significantly or stop altogether in winter.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus and succulent soil, with a high proportion of mineral grit like coarse sand, pumice, or perlite. This ensures good drainage and prevents waterlogging.
- Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 55°F to 80°F (13°C to 27°C) when grown indoors. Can tolerate a wider range outdoors as long as it's protected from frost.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by stem cuttings or offsets. Cuttings should be allowed to callus before planting in well-draining soil.
- Fertilizer: You can fertilize during spring and summer with a balanced cactus fertilizer diluted at half strength, once a month.
Important Notes:
- This cactus variety is known by several common names, including "Crested Blue Candle Cactus" and "Dinosaur Back Plant".
- The crested form is highly sought after by collectors due to its unique appearance.
- While generally easy to care for, proper watering is crucial to prevent root rot.
- Providing sufficient bright light is essential for healthy growth and vibrant blue coloration.
