The ‘Strictum’ cultivar is very substantial and is known for its unique crested shape.

Common Names:

  • This plant is known by various names, including "Crested Blue Flame," "Crested Blue Candle," "Dinosaur Back Plant," and "Crested Blue Myrtle".

Description:

  • It's a cultivar (cv. 'Strictum') of the Myrtillocactus geometrizans species, known for its distinctive crested form.
  • The "f. cristata" indicates the crested or fanning out growth pattern, where the stems widen and cluster together.
  • The plant is described as slow-growing and widely sought after.
  • It has a blue-green or blue-gray coloring.
  • The stems are typically erect and columnar with 5-8 ribs.
  • The "Strictum" form may have smaller spines compared to the normal form.
  • It can grow quite large, potentially reaching up to 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide in its standard form, but the crested form tends to be more compact.
  • It may or may not produce flowers or fruit, but it has the capability to do so.

Cultivation:

  • Light: Prefers bright, direct sunlight, but avoid scorching sun in the hottest periods, especially for young plants. Provide indirect light during winter dormancy.
  • Watering: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water regularly in spring and summer, but significantly reduce or stop watering in winter. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which this plant is prone to.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining cactus and succulent mix or sandy soil. A mixture of pumice, clay, and loam to ensure good drainage is recommended.
  • Temperature: Protect from frost. Temperatures below 10°C (50°F) are not ideal, so bring it indoors during colder periods. Hardiness zones 9-11.
  • Repotting: Repot every other year or when the pot becomes too small.
  • Fertilizing: You can fertilize monthly during the growing season with specific cactus fertilizers if you want faster growth. Stop fertilizing in winter.

Propagation:

  • Propagation should be done by cuttings to preserve the crested form. Allow the cutting surface to dry and callus over before planting in soil.

Other:

  • The crested form ('cristata') is a natural mutation that was selected and propagated vegetatively.

Myrtillocactus geometrizans cv. 'Strictum' f. cristata is a striking crested cactus that is relatively easy to care for, requiring bright light, infrequent watering, well-draining soil, and protection from cold temperatures.
