🌵

A striking and highly collectible form of Melocactus bahiensis ssp. amethystinus, this species is admired for its beautifully structured body, pronounced ribbing, and the extraordinary cephalium that eventually forms at maturity.

The stem develops in rich tones of blue-green to dusty olive, often accented by deep purple or amethyst-colored shading under strong light — a quality that gives this subspecies its memorable name. Thick ribs and carefully spaced areoles create a bold geometric structure, while the contrasting spines add texture and rhythm across the surface.

As the plant matures, it may begin forming the distinctive woolly cephalium — the “Turk’s Cap” crown for which the genus is famous. This unusual structure emerges from the top of the cactus in a dense mass of wool and bristles, eventually producing small flowers and fruit directly from the crown.

Even before reaching maturity, the plant carries a powerful sculptural presence that feels both ancient and refined.

🌱 Care Instructions

☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and enhances coloration.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce significantly during cooler months but do not allow prolonged cold dampness.

🪨 Soil
Use a very fast-draining cactus or mineral-based mix with excellent airflow around the roots.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warmth year-round. Protect carefully from frost and cold temperatures.

💨 Humidity
Low humidity preferred. Good airflow is beneficial.

🪴 Growth Habit
Globular to short columnar cactus with pronounced ribbing. Mature specimens develop a woolly cephalium from the crown.

📝 Special Note
Melocactus species are less tolerant of cold and prolonged drought than many desert cacti. Consistent warmth is important for long-term success.
