Mammillaria perezdelarosae v. andersoniana f. cristata is a rare crested form of the diminutive and beautiful Mammillaria cactus. The "cristata" designation indicates a mutation where the stem develops in a wavy or fan-shaped manner, rather than in the typical rounded shape.
KEY FEATURES:
- Form: Unlike the round, solitary stem of the standard species, this crested form creates convoluted, tangled, and brain-like growths over time. It is a slow-growing cactus that can eventually form a large, tangled cluster up to 25 cm across.
- Stems: The stems are dark green and relatively small, forming a thick, fan-shaped body.
- Spines: Its unique appearance is enhanced by dense clusters of spines that follow the wavy patterns of the crested growth.
- Radial spines: These are numerous (50-63), symmetrically arranged, and white or hyaline.
- Central spines: The central spine is typically one per tubercle, straight, and dark brown or black.
-
Flowers: The flowers are funnel-shaped and relatively small. They are usually a pale yellowish color with a brownish midstripe, blooming in late winter.
CARE:
- Light: This cactus requires bright, indirect light to partial shade. Higher light levels encourage better spine development, but it must be protected from intense afternoon sun to prevent sunburn.
- Watering: It is very sensitive to overwatering. Water infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. It should be kept dry during its winter dormancy.
- Soil: Use a very porous, well-draining cactus mix. A neutral substrate with plenty of grit is ideal.
- Temperature: It prefers warmer conditions but can tolerate brief exposure to temperatures as low as 23°F. It grows best with nighttime lows between 32°F and 52°F.
-
Potting: Due to its sensitivity to overwatering, keeping it in a shallow pot is recommended,
RARITY:
The crested form is highly sought after by collectors, partly due to its unique features and because it is still rare in cultivation.
