Mammillaria bocasana cv. multilanata f. cristata is a captivating crested cactus, a cultivated variety of the popular "Powder Puff Cactus" (Mammillaria bocasana). It is known for its unusual and visually striking crested (or fan-shaped) growth and abundant, soft, white hairs.
Characteristics
· Crested Growth: Instead of the typical globular stems of the standard Mammillaria bocasana, this crested form exhibits a fascinating fan-shaped, wavy, or brain-like growth pattern. Each plant is unique, with no two growing exactly alike.
· Soft and Fuzzy Appearance: The stems are densely covered in an abundance of short, white, woolly hairs, giving the plant a soft, fuzzy texture. These hairs almost completely conceal the blue-green stems.
· Spines: Along with the woolly hairs, it possesses numerous short, white, hairlike radial spines and short, hooked central spines that are reddish-brown.
· Flowers: In spring and summer, it produces small, funnel-form flowers that can be creamy white, pinkish, or yellow.
· Origin: This cultivated variety is of garden origin. The parent species, Mammillaria bocasana, is native to central Mexico, thriving in arid and semi-arid environments like canyon walls and semi-deserts at high altitudes.
Care
· Light: Thrives in full sun or bright direct light, but benefits from afternoon shade in hot climates.
· Watering: Water regularly in summer, but avoid overwatering as it is prone to rot. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Keep the plant dry during winter dormancy.
· Soil: Requires sandy and very porous soil with good drainage. A well-drained cactus mix with added grit or coarse sand is recommended.
· Feeding: Fertilize every 2 to 4 weeks with a half-strength cactus fertilizer during the growing season (summer).
· Cold Tolerance: Quite frost resistant if kept dry, hardy as low as -5° C. Some reports suggest it can tolerate temperatures as low as -12° C (10° F). It is recommended to bring the plant indoors if there is a risk of freezing temperatures.
· Growth Rate: This is a rapidly growing species and can produce large clumps in a few years.
· Propagation: Can be propagated by division of larger clumps (cuttings) in spring or summer, and also by seed sown in early spring.
Key takeaways
· Mammillaria bocasana cv. multilanata f. cristata is a highly desirable cactus due to its unique crested form and furry appearance.
· Like many cacti, it is drought-tolerant and requires well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight.
· While relatively easy to care for, it's crucial to avoid overwatering to prevent rot.
