The name Larryleachia cactiformis refers to a small, rare stapeliad succulent native to South Africa and Namibia. Though it has no spines, it is often mistaken for a cactus due to its ribbed, segmented shape.

KEY FEATURES:

  • Appearance: The stem is cylindrical and fleshy, growing 4 to 6 inches (10–15 cm) tall. The surface is covered in polygonal tubercles (blisters) arranged in 12 to 16 rows, giving it a segmented, checkered look. Its coloration ranges from greenish-white to gray-green.
  • Habitat: In the wild, it grows in rocky areas in the Northern Cape region, including the Richtersveld, Namaqualand, and the quartz hills of western Bushmanland.
  • Flowers: In summer, small, star-shaped flowers appear near the stem's apex. The fleshy flowers are five-pointed and pale yellow, with dark red spots and lighter red tips.
  • Pollination: The plant has a specialized pollination system that uses flies. The insects are deceived by the flowers, partially trapped, and used to carry pollen to another plant.
  • Growth habit: It typically grows as a single stem but can branch from the base to form clumps. There is also a rare crested form, L. cactiformis var. cristata, which is highly sought after by collectors.

CARE:

  • arryleachia cactiformis is a challenging plant for cultivation, primarily due to its sensitivity to overwatering and susceptibility to root rot.
  • Sunlight: It needs bright, indirect sunlight to flourish. Too much direct sun can cause sunburn, especially if it is not acclimated properly.
  • Soil: A very well-draining cactus and succulent mix is essential. A gritty mix containing perlite, pumice, sand, and other rocky materials works well. Clay pots are recommended to help the soil dry out more quickly.
  • Watering: Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly or stop altogether during the dormant winter months. Overwatering can cause the stems to become swollen and mushy.
  • Temperature: This species thrives in warm temperatures. In colder climates, it is best grown under cover or as an indoor plant to avoid exposure to cold and moisture.
  • Fertilizing: Feed sparingly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.

ETYMOLOGY:

The name Larryleachia cactiformis comes from:

  • Larryleachia: The genus name honors Leslie "Larry" Leach, an English-born engineer and self-taught botanist who specialized in studying succulents.
  • cactiformis: This species name means "cactus-shaped," referring to its segmented, cactus-like stems.
