Kleinia neriifolia, also known by the Spanish name verode or berode, is a flowering plant species in the daisy family (Asteraceae). It is a succulent plant native to the Canary Islands.
Key characteristics:
- Branches: Articulated, appearing like a string of sausages.
- Leaves: Thick, elongated, stalkless leaves up to 12 cm long, clustered at the tops of branches.
- Size: Can reach 3 meters or more in height.
- Flowers: Fragrant, grey-white flowers bloom between March and October.
- Deciduous: Sheds its leaves in the dry season.
- Reproduction: Primarily by reseeding, but also by cuttings.
Care:
- Sunlight: Prefers bright, direct sunlight.
- Watering: Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry out between waterings, as overwatering can be an issue due to water stored in the leaves.
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, like sandy compost.
- Temperature: Tolerates dry conditions. It is generally hardy to around 28°F (-2°C), but protection from freezing is recommended, especially for young plants or in humid conditions.
Other details:
- Former name: Senecio kleinia.
- Habitat: Grows on rocky slopes in semi-arid areas of the Canary Islands.
- Common Names: Verode, berode, Canary Islands candle plant, mountain grass.
Kleinia neriifolia is an attractive, low-maintenance succulent suitable for dry gardens or containers in appropriate climates.
