🌵

Kleinia stapeliiformis cristata is a rare crested form of the South African succulent commonly known as the Pickle Plant. This unusual mutation transforms the normally upright cylindrical stems into flowing, fan-like growth with intricate ridges and sculptural movement.

Crested plants occur when the growing point naturally changes shape, causing the plant to expand along a line rather than from a single point. The result is a living sculpture where no two specimens ever develop exactly alike.

This specimen shows exceptional character, with broad undulating crests, beautiful green patterning, and the distinctive ribbed texture associated with Kleinia stapeliiformis. The combination of its unusual growth form and subtle markings creates an appearance somewhere between coral, stone, and botanical architecture.

Unlike many crested succulents that are grafted or mass-produced, well-developed specimens of Kleinia stapeliiformis cristata remain uncommon in collections. Their slow, unpredictable growth is exactly what makes mature examples so desirable.

As it continues to age, the crest may expand, fold, and create increasingly complex forms, becoming more sculptural with each growing season.

A rare collector succulent prized for its:

natural crested mutation

architectural fan-shaped growth

beautiful ribbed surface patterning

and one-of-a-kind sculptural presence

A true collector piece celebrating the unpredictable artistry found in nature.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light

Bright indirect light to gentle sun. Morning sun is ideal. Provide protection from intense afternoon sun, especially during periods of extreme heat.

💧 Water

Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the plant to fully dry before watering again. Reduce watering during cooler months.

🪨 Soil

Requires a very fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Mineral amendments such as pumice, lava rock, or coarse material help protect the root system.

🌡️ Temperature

Protect from frost. Prefers warm growing conditions and temperatures above 45°F.

🌬️ Humidity

Low humidity with excellent airflow is preferred. Avoid prolonged moisture around the base of the crest.

📈 Growth Habit

Rare cristate form producing flattened, fan-like growth rather than typical upright stems. Each specimen develops a completely individual shape as it matures.

✍️ Special Note

Crested growth is a natural mutation and cannot be exactly duplicated. The folds, curves, and patterns of this specimen are unique — making it a true one-of-one collector plant.
