🌵
Kalanchoe beharensis var. subnuda is one of Madagascar’s most dramatic succulent forms — developing a tall, upright trunk crowned with enormous silver-green leaves that resemble weathered elephant ears drifting in desert wind.
Unlike the more heavily felted standard Kalanchoe beharensis, the subnuda form carries a smoother, more exposed leaf surface while still maintaining that unmistakable prehistoric silhouette collectors love. Mature specimens develop incredible vertical presence, eventually becoming almost tree-like with stacked leaf scars climbing the trunk like ancient armor.
This particular specimen has already reached an extraordinary scale, with broad mature foliage and a beautifully elongated form that feels more sculptural than botanical.
An unforgettable statement plant.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. This species develops its strongest structure, leaf size, and silver-green coloration with several hours of direct sunlight daily. In lower light, growth may become stretched and less compact.
💧 Water
Allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water more regularly during active spring and summer growth, but reduce significantly in winter. Mature specimens are highly drought tolerant once established. Avoid allowing moisture to sit in the crown for extended periods.
🪨 Soil
Requires a very fast-draining cactus/succulent mix with excellent airflow around the roots. Mineral-heavy mixes with pumice, lava rock, or coarse grit are ideal for long-term health.
🌡️ Temperature
Protect from frost and prolonged cold exposure. Prefers warm temperatures above 45°F and thrives in dry climates with strong air circulation.
🌵 Growth Habit
Slow-growing upright Madagascan succulent that eventually forms a thick trunk-like stem topped with massive architectural foliage. Mature specimens become highly sculptural and tree-like with age.
✨ Special Note
Older leaves naturally weather, scar, and develop imperfect edges over time — part of the rugged character that makes mature specimens so desirable among collectors. The smoother foliage of var. subnuda gives this form a more exposed, almost prehistoric appearance compared to the classic felted form of Kalanchoe beharensis.
