Jatropha berlandieri, commonly known as Buddha Belly, is a fascinating caudiciform plant native to the dry regions of Texas and northern Mexico. Highly prized by collectors for its swollen, sculptural caudex, this species stores water in its rounded base as an adaptation to harsh desert conditions. Over time, each plant develops its own unique character, with twisting branches, seasonal foliage, and an ancient bonsai-like presence.

🌵 Care Instructions

☀️ Light:
Provide bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and a healthy caudex. Acclimate gradually when moving into stronger outdoor conditions.

💧 Water:
Water thoroughly during the active growing season when soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy when leaves drop.

🌱 Soil:
Use a very fast-draining cactus and succulent mix with plenty of mineral material such as pumice, lava rock, or perlite. Avoid moisture-retentive soils.

🌡️ Temperature:
Protect from frost. Jatropha berlandieri prefers warm, dry conditions and should be protected below approximately 40°F.

Why It Stands Out:
Beloved for its oversized “Buddha Belly” caudex and rugged desert character, Jatropha berlandieri is one of the most charming and unusual caudiciform plants. Its swollen base, seasonal transformation, and naturally sculptural growth habit make it feel more like a living artifact than an ordinary plant.
