Haworthiopsis tessellate (formerly Haworthia tessellata), commonly known as Veined Haworthia or Alligator Plant, is a slow-growing, stemless succulent prized for its distinctive "windowpane" leaf patterns that resemble reptile skin.

APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS

  • Appearance: Features thick, triangular rosettes (3–6 inches wide) with translucent, checkered upper surfaces called "leaf windows".
  • Coloration: Typically dark green, but can flush to a coppery-red or magenta when exposed to bright sun or slight drought stress.
  • Flowers: Produces small, tubular white-and-green flowers on slender stalks up to 20 inches long during the summer.
  • Growth Habit: Naturally forms dense clumps by producing "pups" (offsets) from its base.

CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate low indoor light better than most succulents, direct afternoon sun may scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Use the "soak and dry" method—water deeply until it drains out, then wait for the soil to dry completely before watering again. Reduce watering in the summer when the plant may go dormant.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining gritty mix (at least 50% mineral grit like pumice or perlite) to prevent root rot, which is the most common cause of death for this species.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9b–11b. Protect it from frost, as it can only tolerate temperatures down to about 25°F (-3.9°C).
  • SafetyPet-safe and non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans.
