Key features of :
- Appearance: This cactus has a distinctive "monstrose" growth with a bumpy or knobby surface and irregular ribs. It often has prominent tubercles along the rib edges, creating a somewhat saw-toothed look. Its appearance has been likened to a tortoise shell, which is reflected in its name "Kikko," the Japanese word for "Turtle shell". The stem is typically a deep olive-green to yellowish-green, which can turn purplish or brownish in full sun.
- Spines: It is generally spineless or mostly thornless.
- Flowers: It produces large, pale pink flowers from mid-spring to early summer.
- Growth habit: It can grow alone or produce offsets from its areoles, reaching heights of up to 10 cm and diameters of 8-15 cm. It is generally a slow-growing cactus.
- Propagation: It can be propagated through grafting, offsets, or seed.
- Care:
- Light: Prefers abundant, bright, and direct light.
- Watering: Requires moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Needs a well-draining cactus mix, which may include perlite and coarse sand.
- Fertilization: Can be fed with a diluted, balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season. Some sources suggest it doesn't need added fertilizer if the potting soil is changed annually.
- Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity.
- Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures. It benefits from cooler nighttime temperatures around 50°F to 60°F.
- Pruning: Typically maintains its shape naturally, but damaged or dried parts can be trimmed.
- Toxicity: It is not known to be toxic to humans or animals.
Note: The "monstrose" form can vary between individual plants. It is often grafted but can also grow on its own roots. Young seedlings may not immediately show the characteristic indentations, which develop with maturity.
