A crested and variegated form of the Gymnocalycium mihanovichii cactus, known for its unusual growth pattern and vibrant colors. It is a unique plant in the cactus world due to its rare qualities.

Crested (f. cristata): Instead of the typical single growing point of most cacti, crested cacti have growth that occurs along a line, creating a fan-shaped or wavy appearance. This is a mutation that is highly prized by collectors. 

Variegated: The plant exhibits multiple colors, like pink, yellow, red, green, or purple.  This variegation results from a mutation that causes the cactus to produce less chlorophyll in certain areas, revealing the underlying pigments. 

Care and features

·         Light: Requires bright, indirect sunlight, as the colorful top portion (scion) of a grafted plant burns easily in direct sun.

·         Soil: Needs a well-draining cactus mix to prevent root rot.

·         Watering: Water infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

·         Temperature: Prefers warmer temperatures, ideally over 60°F, according to YouTube. Avoid cold temperatures and frost.

·         Growth:  Slow-growing, forming new offsets around the scion, but not growing taller.

·         Blooming: Can produce pink or white, daisy-like flowers in late spring or early summer. This is rare indoors. 

Important considerations

·         Chlorophyll: The variegated parts of the cactus may have little or no chlorophyll, which is essential for photosynthesis. This means that the more colorful the variegation, the more it relies on a grafted rootstock (the bottom green part) for survival. When selecting a variegated Gymnocalycium, look for one with 30-50% green coloration for better health and longevity

·         Rarity: This crested and variegated form is a rare cultivar. Some specimens are directly imported from Thailand and are considered rare in the US market.
