Geohintonia mexicana is a rarely-seen small, Mexican cactus species known for its unique, strongly ribbed appearance and slow growth. It's a gypsophile, meaning it thrives in gypsum-rich soils and is native to the Mexican state of Nuevo León. The plant is considered critically endangered due to habitat destruction and collecting.
Here's a more detailed look at Geohintonia mexicana:
- Appearance:
It's a solitary and globose cactus, occasionally becoming columnar. It has 18-20 prominent ribs and lacks tubercles. The blue-green plant grows to about 4.5 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter.
- Growth:
It's a slow-growing cactus, with seedlings taking a decade or more to reach flowering size. It's often seen grafted onto other cacti for faster growth.
- Habitat:
Geohintonia mexicana is exclusively found in Mexico, specifically in Nuevo León on gypsum hills at elevations between 1200 and 1350 meters.
- Propagation:
It's primarily propagated from seeds, but seedlings can take many years to mature. Sometimes, older plants may produce tillers, which can be propagated as cuttings, though rooting can be challenging.
- Care:
It requires well-draining soil, strong sun exposure, and infrequent watering. Water should be withheld during winter or when night temperatures drop below 10°C.
- Conservation:
The species is critically endangered due to habitat loss and collecting. Purchasing plants that appear to be field-collected should be avoided.
