Ferocactus pringlei, also known as the Mexican Fire Barrel Cactus, is a robust and striking succulent known for its dense, vibrant red spines. Native to north-central Mexico, this barrel cactus is prized by collectors and landscapers for its dramatic appearance.

Characteristics

  • Appearance: The cactus is deep green and starts off with a globular shape before becoming more cylindrical and columnar as it matures. It is covered in noticeable ribs and can eventually reach several feet in height.
  • Spines: The thick, deeply red spines are the most distinctive feature and can appear to glow when backlit by the sun. The spines are often recurved or hooked. Some varieties may also have white bristles.
  • Flowers: Mature plants produce a ring of orange to reddish-orange flowers that form a crown at the top of the barrel in the summer. In Mexico, the buds of related species have been consumed.
  • Fruit: After flowering, bulbous, golden fruit may appear.
  • Growth: This is a slow-growing cactus. It may take 15 years or more to reach 3 feet tall. Mature plants often produce offsets or clumps at their base.

Cultivation and Care

  • Sunlight: This cactus requires full sun to thrive and develop its best spines and shape. In extremely hot climates, partial shade in the afternoon can prevent discoloration or scorching.
  • Soil: Use average, well-drained, and gritty soil. A cactus or succulent mix is ideal.
  • Watering: Water periodically during the summer months. It is important to avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage to prevent rot.
  • Hardiness: It is hardy to temperatures in the upper teens, or down to about 25°F (-4°C).
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or from offsets.

Habitat and Distribution

  • Native range: Ferocactus pringlei is widespread in the rocky, limestone hillsides of north-central Mexico, including the states of Nuevo Leon, San Luis Potosí, Coahuila, and Zacatecas.
  • Habitat: It thrives in desert environments, on rocky limestone hillsides where it can withstand intense heat and some frost. The species is also noted to be polymorphic, meaning its characteristics can vary depending on the growing environment.
