Ferocactus glaucescens inermis, also known as the blue barrel cactus, is a fascinating and sought-after variety of Ferocactus glaucescens. This particular form stands out due to its absence of sharp spines on its stem, though it might still have small bristles or bumps.
Key Characteristics:
- Striking Appearance: It has a distinct glaucous blue-green stem due to a waxy coating that protects it from the sun. It starts as a bumpy stem and develops into a large barrel cactus with defined ribs.
- Spineless Variety: Cultivated specifically to be a spineless version of the Ferocactus glaucescens.
- Resilient and Drought-Tolerant: Can thrive in arid conditions, making it ideal for xeriscaping or drought-tolerant landscaping. It prefers a dry environment.
- Long Lifespan: With proper care, it can live for decades.
- Easy Care: Relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal watering and preferring full sun to partial shade.
- Beautiful Flowers: Produces lemon yellow, funnel-shaped flowers in late spring and summer.
- Native Origin: Native to Eastern Central Mexico, specifically rocky limestone slopes in deciduous dry forests and juniper scrub woodlands.
Care Information:
- Sunlight: Needs bright, direct sunlight. A south-facing window is ideal, but a grow light can be used as a supplement.
- Watering: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common issue and should be avoided. Water less during fall and winter (dormant season).
- Soil: Requires well-draining soil, like a cactus and succulent mix. Amend regular potting mix with grit (e.g., coarse sand, pumice, perlite) for better drainage. Aim for a mix with 70% to 80% mineral grit.
- Temperature: Thrives in high temperatures (above 75°F) and low humidity. Avoid consistent temperatures below 40°F.
- Fertilizer: Fertilization is not strictly necessary, but a cactus-specific fertilizer can be used during the growing season (spring and summer) if desired.
