Euphorbia ‘Watusi’ is a rare and striking succulent hybrid, often credited as a creation of the late plant breeder Bill Baker. It is highly valued by collectors for its unique sculptural appearance, resembling a cross between Euphorbia ammak and Euphorbia pseudocactus. It is characterized by compact, column-like growth and marble-like markings. Often sold as cuttings, it thrives in full sun to partial shade, requiring well-draining soil and dry conditions between waterings, with hardiness in zones 9-11
APPEARANCE & DESCRIPTION
- Appearance: It features an upright, compact growth habit with green branches and a unique pattern that some enthusiasts describe as "other-worldly".
- Size: Specimens can grow quite large, with some reaching up to 39 inches tall and approximately 1.5 inches in diameter.
- Flowers: Like other plants in this genus, it produces small structures called cyathia rather than traditional flowers.
CULTIVATION and CARE:
- Light: Requires abundant sunlight, typically at least 5 to 8 hours of direct sun daily.
- Watering: Drought-tolerant; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Watering should be reduced to about once a month during the winter dormancy period.
- Soil: Must be planted in well-draining soil, such as a sandy cactus or succulent mix, to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Best suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 9b through 11b. It should be moved indoors if temperatures drop below 55°F.
- Toxicity: Like all Euphorbias, it contains a milky white sap that is toxic and can cause severe skin and eye irritation; always wear gloves when handling or pruning.
