🌵

Euphorbia viguieri var. capuroniana is an extraordinary Madagascan Euphorbia prized for its thick, sculptural stems, formidable spination, and dramatic crown of elongated green leaves. Native to Madagascar, this distinctive variety develops a wonderfully prehistoric appearance as it matures, with heavily textured stems marked by prominent leaf scars and paired spines. This exceptional specimen is particularly impressive for its size and multi-branched form, carrying four substantial established branches along with two new basal babies emerging below—a remarkable architectural plant that is already developing into a large, complex colony. Its combination of mature structure, vigorous new growth, and beautifully rugged character makes this an outstanding example for the serious Madagascan Euphorbia collector.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light
Bright light to partial or full sun. Gradually acclimate to strong direct sunlight, particularly when moving the plant outdoors or increasing exposure.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry well between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months and periods of dormancy. Avoid allowing the roots to remain wet.

🪨 Soil
Requires a very fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix with excellent drainage.

🌡️ Temperature
Warm-growing and frost-sensitive. Protect from cold temperatures and frost, particularly during winter.

🌬️ Humidity
Prefers good air circulation and generally dry conditions. Avoid prolonged cool, damp conditions.

📈 Growth Habit
An upright, branching Madagascan Euphorbia that develops thick, spiny stems crowned with foliage during active growth. Mature specimens can become increasingly architectural as additional branches and basal growth develop.

✍️ Special Note
Like all Euphorbias, this plant contains a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Handle carefully, particularly when pruning, repotting, or if a stem is damaged.

Collector Notes

Euphorbia viguieri var. capuroniana belongs to Madagascar's remarkable assemblage of highly specialized endemic Euphorbias and is especially admired for the contrast between its rugged, heavily armed stems and leafy crowns. While young plants may remain comparatively simple in form, older specimens become considerably more dramatic as their stems thicken and branching increases. Multi-branched examples with active basal growth are particularly appealing because they display the species' mature architecture rather than the solitary form more often encountered in younger plants. With four established branches and two new babies already emerging, this substantial specimen has both the presence of a mature collector plant and the promise of becoming even more sculptural with age.
