Euphorbia viguieri var. capuroniana is a striking succulent plant native to the coastal forests of central and northern Madagascar. Despite its cactus-like appearance, this species belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and is known for its angular, bright green stems, spiraling whitish thorns, and vibrant red flowers.
Characteristics
· Appearance: Features an angular, bright green stem with vertical, spiraling whitish thorns and vibrant red floral clusters (cyathia) at the stem tip.
· Leaves: Simple, oval leaves are emerald green with reddish bases and prominent white veins on the underside, clustered towards the branch tips.
· Thorns: Robust, laciniate (subdivided towards the apex) thorns measuring 1.5-2 cm long, arising from a thick tuberculate base.
· Flowers: Erect cyathia, surrounded by brilliant red bracts (cyathophylls), appear in spring.
· Growth: Slow-growing and typically reaches a mature size of under 15 cm (6 inches).
· Dormancy: May become deciduous in winter, shedding its leaves, especially in cooler regions.
Habitat and hardiness
· Native Habitat: Thrives in the fissures of eroded limestone rocks in the coastal forests of central and northern Madagascar, often in sunny or semi-shaded locations.
· Hardiness: Prefers temperatures above 13°C (55°F) and is not tolerant of frost. In colder climates, it's best grown indoors by a sunny window. It's suitable for USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 10a to 11b.
Care
· Sunlight: Requires plenty of bright light to full sun exposure.
· Soil: Needs extremely well-draining, gritty soil, such as a cactus mix with added coarse sand or pumice.
· Watering: Water deeply during the growing season (spring to fall) when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly in winter, providing just enough to prevent wilting. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
· Fertilizing: A balanced, diluted fertilizer (e.g., 1/4 strength 10-10-10 NPK) can be applied weekly during the growing season for potted plants. However, the plant is a slow grower and may not require frequent fertilization.
· Repotting: Repotting is best done in early spring when the plant outgrows its container.
Important considerations
· Toxic Sap: Like other Euphorbia species, Euphorbia viguieri var. capuroniana contains a toxic sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling the plant.
This unique and beautiful succulent makes an excellent addition to any plant collection, especially for those interested in unusual and low-maintenance options.
