Euphorbia valida is a rare and attractive succulent from South Africa known for its spherical, cactiform stem and persistent, bristly flower stalks.

Key Characteristics:

·         Appearance: This slow-growing, dwarf succulent has a ribbed, globular body that is dark green with paler, horizontal bands. The stem has 8 to 12 ribs and can reach up to 20 cm in diameter.

·         Flowers: In summer and fall, it produces small, yellow, cup-shaped flowers called cyathia from the crown. The long, dried peduncles (flower stalks) persist on the plant after blooming, giving it a distinctive, bristly texture.

·         Distinctions: While sometimes considered a subspecies of Euphorbia meloformisE. valida has more persistent peduncles and grows taller.

Care:

·         Light: E. valida thrives in bright light to full sun. A south-facing window is ideal for an indoor plant. If moving a plant from a shadier spot to full sun, do so gradually to prevent scorching.

·         Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water moderately during the summer growing season, and very little in the winter when the plant goes dormant. Overwatering is a common issue and can lead to root rot.

·         Soil: Use a well-draining mineral soil mix, such as a commercial cactus mix with added perlite or pumice.

·         Fertilizer: This plant is not a heavy feeder. Repotting annually should provide enough nutrients, or you can use a quarter-strength all-purpose fertilizer during the summer growing season.

·         Temperature: It prefers warm temperatures and is hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9b through 11, where temperatures typically stay above 25°F (-4°C) for short periods.

Toxicity:

·         Toxic sap: Like all euphorbias, the plant's milky latex sap is toxic and should be handled with care.

·         Skin and eye contact: The sap can cause skin irritation and a painful rash. If it gets in the eyes, it can cause severe irritation and even temporary blindness.

·         Ingestion: If ingested, the sap will cause extreme irritation of the mouth, throat, and stomach.

·         Handling precautions: Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or pruning the plant. Keep it away from children and pets.
