Euphorbia tulearensis is a miniature succulent species endemic to Madagascar, valued by collectors for its attractive caudex and crinkled leaves.

Key Characteristics:

·         Form: A slow-growing, shrubby, bonsai-like succulent, reaching a maximum height of about 8 inches (20 cm).

·         Caudex: The plant develops a rounded, woody, tuberous base (caudex) with age, which can be partially exposed above the soil line for a bonsai effect.

·         Stems: Thick, short, and irregularly shaped branches grow from the top of the caudex.

·         Leaves: Wavy, crinkled, and highly undulated leaves are arranged in rosettes at the tips of the branches. Leaf color varies from blue-green to brownish-green depending on light exposure and individual genetics.

·         Flowers: The flowers, or cyathia, are small and bell-shaped with a beige-brown color.

Care:

·         Light: Euphorbia tulearensis thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate full sun. In full sun, the leaves develop more vivid colors. Too little light can cause weak, spindly growth.

·         Soil: Use a very gritty, airy, and fast-draining potting mix. A good mix consists primarily of non-organic material like pumice, lava grit, or clay, with very little peat or organic matter.

·         Watering: Water regularly during the active growing season (spring and summer), but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. The plant is extremely sensitive to rot if kept cold and damp, especially when dormant. Water very sparingly, or not at all, in winter.

·         Temperature: This tender species is suited for tropical climates (USDA Zones 10–11) and cannot tolerate cold temperatures or frost. It requires warmth, so indoor plants should be kept away from cold drafts.

·         Fertilizer: Fertilize sparingly during the summer with a diluted fertilizer formulated for cacti and succulents.

·         Potting: Repot every two to three years. Use a pot with generous drainage holes.

Toxicity & Handling:

Like all euphorbias, E. tulearensis produces a milky white latex sap that is poisonous and can be irritating.

·         Skin contact: The sap can cause skin irritation, itching, and rashes. In case of contact, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water.

·         Eye contact: Exposure to the eyes is especially dangerous and can cause extreme pain and temporary blindness. Flush the eyes with water immediately and seek medical attention.

·         Ingestion: Ingestion is rare but can cause irritation to the mouth, throat, and stomach. Keep the plant away from children and pets.

·         Safe handling: Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling or pruning the plant.
