Formerly known throughout the collector world as Monadenium spectabile, this gorgeous Madagascan species is now more accurately classified as Euphorbia spectabilis — though many longtime collectors still affectionately refer to it by its older Monadenium name.
This species develops a dramatically elongated trunk lined with rhythmic spines and topped by oversized paddle-like leaves that seem almost impossibly delicate against the tall armored stem. The contrast between the smooth blue-green body and broad tropical foliage gives the plant an unmistakable silhouette unlike nearly anything else in cultivation.
At nearly two feet tall, this specimen already carries tremendous sculptural presence — elegant, surreal, and slightly otherworldly. The elongated form feels almost like a living piece of modernist desert architecture.
Native to Madagascar, Euphorbia spectabilis thrives in warmth, bright light, and fast-draining conditions. During active growth it produces fresh foliage from the crown, creating a dramatic canopy effect above the narrow spined trunk.
An unforgettable species prized among serious Euphorbia and caudiciform collectors for its:
- towering silhouette
- unusual leaf structure
- Madagascan origin
- exceptional visual presence
Rarely encountered at this size and form.
