Euphorbia sp. nova Somalia ‘Hordio’ is an exceptionally uncommon succulent Euphorbia originating from Somalia, a region renowned among collectors for some of the most distinctive and highly specialized members of the genus. Plants from these arid habitats have evolved to endure intense sun, prolonged dry periods and exceptionally lean, fast-draining soils.

This exact seed-grown specimen is particularly compelling for its wonderfully unruly architecture. Numerous angular, strongly ribbed stems emerge from a compact base, with one central stem rising dramatically above the surrounding growth. The coloration is equally striking: bright yellow-green ribs contrast sharply with deeper green margins and dark reddish-brown to nearly black spines, giving the plant a remarkably graphic appearance.

At approximately 6 inches tall × 5 inches wide, it has already developed considerable character. Rather than the uniform symmetry of many cultivated succulents, this plant has the wonderfully strange, almost primordial appearance that makes Somali Euphorbias so desirable to serious collectors.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light: Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, pronounced coloration and sturdy stems. Acclimate gradually after shipping before exposing the plant to intense afternoon sun.

💧 Water: Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. Somali Euphorbias are highly adapted to arid conditions and should never remain continuously moist. Reduce watering substantially during cooler periods.

🪨 Soil: Requires an exceptionally fast-draining, mineral-rich mix. A high proportion of pumice, lava rock, coarse grit or similar inorganic material is recommended to provide excellent drainage and root aeration.

🌡️ Temperature: Prefers warm conditions and should be protected from cold temperatures and frost. Particularly during cooler weather, keep the plant dry.

💨 Humidity: Low humidity and excellent air circulation are strongly preferred. Avoid prolonged cool, damp conditions.

🌱 Growth Habit: Develops upright, angular succulent stems capable of branching from the base and along established growth. This specimen has already formed an especially attractive multi-stemmed, sculptural habit, with stems of dramatically varying heights.

⚠️ Special Note: Like other Euphorbias, this plant produces a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Handle carefully, particularly when pruning or if stems or roots are damaged, and keep away from children and pets.

Collector Notes

Somalia occupies a special place in the world of succulent Euphorbias. Its hot, seasonally dry landscapes support an extraordinary concentration of unusual species, many with remarkably restricted distributions and highly specialized growth habits. For collectors, Somali plants can represent some of the most intriguing—and difficult to encounter—members of the enormous genus Euphorbia.

The designation sp. nova is particularly interesting. Rather than presenting this plant under a formally established species name, it indicates material regarded as representing a potentially distinct or not-yet-formally-described taxon. “Hordio” refers to the locality or collection designation associated with this material, making provenance an important part of the plant's collector appeal.

And this is not a little seedling waiting years to become interesting. This specimen has already developed into a wonderfully eccentric miniature landscape of its own. Tall stems rise above shorter offsets; narrow lime-green faces are bordered by darker tissue; and formidable dark spines punctuate the entire structure.

Most importantly, it is seed grown. Rather than being a cutting taken from an established mother plant, this individual began from seed and has developed its own architecture from the ground up. Every branch, irregularity and shift in proportion belongs to this particular plant.

At 6 inches tall and 5 inches wide, it has reached that wonderful stage where its mature character is beginning to reveal itself while considerable growth still lies ahead.
