🌵

Euphorbia ‘Sotetsu Kirin’ is an extraordinary Japanese horticultural selection prized for its wonderfully strange, miniature tree-like appearance. Its thickened succulent stems are covered in tightly arranged, geometric tubercles that create an almost pinecone-like surface, while narrow green leaves emerge in fresh clusters from the active growing tips. This beautiful mature specimen has developed far beyond the compact proportions of a young plant: an elongated, heavily corked central trunk rises into multiple branches and growing points, each crowned with fresh foliage. The contrast is remarkable—the pale, weathered lower trunk records years of previous growth while the increasingly green upper branches remain vigorous and active. The result is an exceptionally architectural specimen with the appearance of a tiny, ancient tree.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light
Very bright light to partial or full sun. Strong light encourages sturdy, compact growth and helps maintain the characteristic form. Acclimate gradually to intense direct sunlight to prevent scorching, particularly after periods indoors or under filtered light.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry well before watering again. Reduce watering considerably during cooler months. Avoid prolonged moisture around the roots, particularly when temperatures are low.

🪨 Soil
Requires a very fast-draining succulent mix with substantial mineral content and excellent root aeration. Avoid dense, highly organic, or moisture-retentive soils.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warmth during active growth. Protect from frost and prolonged cold, and keep considerably drier during cool winter conditions.

🌬️ Humidity
Prefers relatively dry conditions with good air circulation. Avoid persistently humid, stagnant environments, particularly when temperatures are cool.

📈 Growth Habit
Develops thick, tuberculate succulent stems with clusters of narrow leaves concentrated near active growing points. With age, plants can elongate, branch repeatedly, and develop pronounced corking on older portions of the stem. Mature specimens can acquire an increasingly tree-like silhouette, with old woody-looking trunks supporting fresh green growth above.

✍️ Special Note
‘Sotetsu Kirin’ is a Japanese cultivar name, and plants under this name may also appear in cultivation with differing botanical attributions or parentage. For collector plants such as this, the established cultivar name is particularly useful because it identifies the distinctive horticultural form recognizable by its heavily tuberculate stems, narrow foliage, and characteristic miniature-tree habit. As with other Euphorbia, the plant contains a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes; handle carefully and keep the sap away from children and pets.

Why It Stands Out

  • Large, mature branched specimen
  • Dramatic miniature tree-like architecture
  • Long, heavily corked and aged central trunk
  • Multiple established branches and active growing points
  • Extraordinary geometric, pinecone-like stem texture
  • Fresh clusters of narrow green foliage
  • Beautiful contrast between old and new growth
  • Increasingly sculptural with maturity
  • Distinctive Japanese horticultural cultivar

Collector Notes

The name ‘Sotetsu Kirin’ comes from Japanese horticulture, where unusual Euphorbia forms have long been selected and propagated for their distinctive architecture. “Sotetsu” refers to the Japanese cycad, an association that becomes immediately understandable when viewing the narrow leaves gathered around the ends of the thick, textured stems. On a mature plant, the effect can resemble a fantastically reduced cycad or palm-like tree rendered in succulent form.

This specimen shows exactly why maturity matters with ‘Sotetsu Kirin’. The lower trunk has become pale, corked, and wonderfully weathered, preserving the pattern of old tubercles even as the plant has continued upward and outward. Above it, multiple branches carry greener, more recent growth, each terminating in lively clusters of narrow leaves. That accumulated structure cannot be replicated by a young nursery plant. It is the product of time: old stem below, successive branching above, and fresh growth continuing at the tips. The result is a remarkably expressive mature Euphorbia that looks less like a conventional succulent than a tiny tree with a history.
