Euphorbia sepulta is a unique and sought-after succulent belonging to the diverse Euphorbia genus. It is a rare, compact perennial that forms impressive flattened cushions, typically reaching about 3 cm in height and up to 30 cm in diameter when growing in its natural habitat. In cultivation, it tends to be more hemispherical in shape.

This fascinating plant boasts numerous branches that form a dense cushion, mostly growing below ground level from a thick, fleshy root. Its stems are characterized by numerous tubercles with well-defined edges outlined by small, white ribs.

The spine-shields are obovate, measuring 1-3mm long and 0.5-1 mm wide. Spines are only present on early seedling growth.

The inflorescences are solitary, 1-forked (simple), and subsessile. The flowers, known as cyathia, are 2 mm in diameter, with a golden yellow nectar-gland measuring 1.2 mm broad. The shape of Euphorbia sepulta bears a resemblance to some South African Medusa head Euphorbias, such as Euphorbia susannae.

Natural habitat

Euphorbia sepulta is endemic to a small area between Geldin and Sahaguri in Somalia, and it is not found elsewhere. It thrives at altitudes ranging from 1640 to 2000 meters above sea level. In its natural habitat, this species grows on flat stony ground within open Juniperus forests.

Care and cultivation

·         Light: Euphorbia sepulta prefers bright, direct sunlight, but can tolerate some partial shade, especially in hotter climates. When grown indoors, provide a location with bright, indirect light, such as near a south or west-facing window, for at least 4-6 hours a day.

·         Soil: Well-draining soil is essential for Euphorbias. A sandy mixture with a neutral pH is ideal, and you can amend dense garden soil with perlite to improve drainage. If potting, use a standard cactus or succulent potting mix and choose an unglazed clay pot to facilitate water evaporation.

·         Watering: Water the plant consistently during its active growing season (spring, summer, and fall), allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, water only when the plant shows signs of wilting. Avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal issues.

·         Temperature: Euphorbias tolerate high summer temperatures, but prefer warmer temperatures during propagation. They do not like cooler temperatures, with anything below 50 degrees Fahrenheit being unsuitable.

·         Fertilizing: Fertilize monthly during the growing season using a water-soluble plant food specifically designed for cacti or succulents.

·         Repotting: Euphorbias benefit from repotting, but do not require it annually.

·         Pruning: Pruning is generally only necessary for overgrown plants to maintain a manageable size.

·         Pests and Diseases: Watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, scale insects, and aphids. Overwatering can lead to root rot and fungal diseases like powdery mildew.

Important Note: Euphorbias contain a white, milky sap called latex, which is toxic and can irritate the skin. Always wear gloves when handling these plants to avoid contact with the sap.
