Key Characteristics:
- Spineless nature: The form "inermis" refers to the absence of spines, making it a safer option for spaces with pets and children compared to the standard Euphorbia royleana which is armed with prickles.
- Appearance: It features thick, cylindrical, green stems that grow in a candelabra shape and can reach heights of 6-10 feet (1.8-3 meters). The stems may develop a reddish or purplish hue in full sun or drought conditions.
- Candelabra shape: The plant forms a distinctive, branching, tree-like structure, giving it a unique aesthetic.
- Leaves: Small, deciduous leaves appear at the tips of the stems during the moist season and typically drop off in hot and cold seasons or during periods of drought.
- Flowers: Produces small, yellowish-green flowers, known as cyathia, which appear in clusters.
- Native Region: Native to the Himalayan region, including India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate full sun. When grown indoors, provide a location with plenty of light. Direct sunlight can enhance coloration but introduce it gradually to prevent sunburn.
- Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
- Soil: Requires well-drained, mineral soil.
- Cold Tolerance: Frost tolerant as long as the soil remains dry in winter. Hardiness Zones 9b to 11b.
- Pruning: Easy to prune to maintain a desired size.
Important Notes:
- Milky Sap: The plant contains a milky white latex sap that is highly toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation. Wear protective gloves when handling.
- Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Pests: Generally has few insect pests, but monitor for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale.
- Overwatering: Can lead to root rot.
