Euphorbia obesa, commonly called the baseball plant or living baseball, is a small, slow-growing, subtropical succulent native to South Africa. It's characterized by its unique, almost ball-shaped, grey-green stem and its ability to tolerate dry conditions, making it a low-maintenance houseplant.

Key Characteristics:

  • Appearance:

The plant has a distinctive, globular stem that can grow up to 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide. It has alternating ridges and furrows that resemble a baseball.

  • Flowers:

Euphorbia obesa produces small, inconspicuous, greenish-yellow flowers, which are not the main attraction of the plant.

  • Growth Habit:

It's a slow-growing, long-lived succulent that thrives in well-draining soil and bright, indirect light.

  • Watering:

It's drought-tolerant and requires infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Propagation:

Euphorbia obesa can be easily propagated from seeds sown in spring or summer.

  • Care:

It prefers well-draining soil, bright, indirect light, and minimal watering, making it a suitable plant for low-maintenance gardeners.

Uses and Significance:

  • Ornamental:

It's valued for its unique shape and texture, making it a popular houseplant and a conversation starter.

  • Low-Maintenance:

Its drought tolerance and low-water needs make it an ideal choice for busy individuals or those who may forget to water plants frequently.

  • Edibility:

It is not recommended for consumption.

  • Endangered in the Wild:

Despite being common in cultivation, Euphorbia obesa is considered endangered in its native habitat.
