Euphorbia obesa is one of the most iconic and sought-after succulent species in the world. Native to a small region of South Africa, this remarkable plant has become legendary among collectors for its nearly perfect geometric form, subtle coloration, and slow, deliberate development.
Often called the "Baseball Plant," Euphorbia obesa grows as a solitary stem marked by symmetrical ribs that create an almost architectural appearance. Young specimens are typically round and globe-shaped, while mature plants gradually elongate and develop increasing character with age.
This specimen displays the features serious collectors seek most: strong rib structure, beautiful blue-green coloration, and substantial natural corking at the base. Far from being a flaw, corking is a hallmark of maturity in older specimens and serves as a visual record of decades of slow growth. The contrast between the weathered lower body and pristine upper growth gives the plant remarkable presence and authenticity.
Unlike many succulents that rely on dramatic spines or unusual branching habits, Euphorbia obesa captivates through proportion, symmetry, texture, and restraint. It is a plant that rewards closer inspection and becomes more impressive the longer it is observed.
A cherished species prized for its:
perfect geometric symmetry
beautiful age-related corking
iconic South African heritage
and timeless sculptural presence
An enduring collector favorite that embodies the elegance and patience of slow-growing succulent cultivation.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Best coloration and compact growth develop with several hours of direct sunlight daily. Acclimate gradually when moving plants into stronger outdoor conditions.
💧 Water
Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to become fully dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy.
🪨 Soil
Requires a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with excellent mineral content. Pumice, lava rock, decomposed granite, and coarse sand are highly beneficial.
🌡️ Temperature
Protect from frost. Prefers temperatures above 45°F and thrives in warm, dry environments.
🌬️ Humidity
Low humidity is preferred. Good airflow helps maintain healthy roots and reduces the risk of excess moisture retention.
📈 Growth Habit
Extremely slow-growing solitary succulent that gradually transitions from a spherical form into a slightly elongated column while maintaining strong rib symmetry throughout its life.
✍️ Special Note
The corking present at the base of mature specimens is a natural sign of age and development. Collectors often value this feature as evidence of maturity and long-term cultivation.
