Euphorbia moratii is a rare, dwarf succulent native to Madagascar, known for its caudiciform base and deciduous, green and pink foliage.

Key characteristics:

  • Appearance: This is a geophytic species, meaning it grows an underground or partially underground tuberous base called a caudex. The caudex can grow up to 4 centimetres in diameter, with the entire plant reaching up to 12 centimetres in height.
  • Foliage: The leaves are deciduous and can vary in color, displaying shades of green, pink, and variegation. The attractive foliage is an oblong shape.
  • Flowers: The plant produces inconspicuous, triangular-shaped flowers (cyathia) in the spring, which typically appear before the new leaves.
  • Latex: Like all plants in the genus Euphorbia, it contains a milky, caustic sap that can cause skin irritation and is poisonous if ingested.

Growing Conditions & Care:

  • Light: This plant requires abundant, bright, and direct sunlight. It will not tolerate low-light conditions.
  • Watering: It is drought-tolerant and should be watered sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Be especially cautious not to overwater during its dormant period in the winter, as this can cause rot.
  • Soil: Use a fast-draining, gritty soil mix formulated for cacti and succulents. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Container: A terracotta pot is recommended because it promotes good airflow and helps the soil dry out more quickly.
  • Fertilizer: It grows slowly and does not require frequent fertilization. If you choose to fertilize, use a balanced, diluted fertilizer during the active growing season in spring and summer.
  • Dormancy: It is common for the plant to go dormant in the winter, during which its growth will slow and it will require even less water.
  • Handling: Always wear gloves when handling the plant to protect yourself from the irritating, milky sap.

Habitat & Conservation

  • Native range: Euphorbia moratii is endemic to Madagascar, where it grows in subtropical or tropical dry lowland grassland and rocky areas.
