Euphorbia knuthii is an extraordinary caudiciform Euphorbia native to southern Africa, particularly South Africa and neighboring regions, where it grows in seasonally dry environments. The species is prized for its unusual combination of a swollen, tuberous underground rootstock and long, slender, spiny stems that emerge above the soil.
Unlike the familiar columnar Euphorbias, which invest much of their growth in thick, upright, water-storing stems, Euphorbia knuthii follows a very different architectural strategy. Its principal storage organ develops below ground, while the stems extend outward in irregular, branching arrangements that can become increasingly elaborate with age.
The contrast is remarkable.
Below the soil is a substantial reservoir of stored resources. Above it is an arrangement of narrow, angular, spiny stems that can appear almost weightless by comparison.
In cultivation, collectors sometimes expose portions of the swollen rootstock to emphasize its caudiciform character, although plants naturally develop much of this structure underground.
The species belongs to a fascinating group of southern African Euphorbias whose forms reflect the challenges of surviving extended dry periods, unpredictable rainfall, and environments where water must be conserved whenever it becomes available.
And then there is this specimen.
With its longest stem measuring approximately 19 inches, this is an impressive example of the extended, architectural growth that makes Euphorbia knuthii so distinctive.
Rather than forming a compact rosette or a conventional upright column, the species develops a more expansive silhouette. Its slender stems create movement a
