Afascinating and highly collectible caudiciform euphorbia prized for its remarkable trailing stems and unusual swollen underground caudex. Unlike most upright succulent species, Euphorbia knuthii produces long, serpentine stems that wander gracefully over the edge of a container, creating a living sculpture unlike almost anything else in cultivation.
Native to southern Africa, this remarkable species spends much of its life storing water beneath the soil in its substantial caudex while sending out flexible green stems that can eventually reach several feet in length. Its curious growth habit has made it a longtime favorite among collectors of unusual succulents and caudiciform plants.
🌵 Care Instructions
☀️ Light: Provide bright light to several hours of direct sun. Bright conditions encourage compact, healthy growth.
💧 Water: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water more frequently during the active growing season and reduce significantly during winter dormancy.
🪨 Soil: Plant in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with excellent drainage.
❄️ Temperature: Protect from frost and prolonged temperatures below 40°F (4°C).
✨ Why It Stands Out
Euphorbia knuthii is treasured for its extraordinary combination of an underground caudex and long, twisting stems that seem to flow organically from the soil. Its unusual architecture gives every mature specimen its own distinctive character, making no two plants exactly alike.
This beautifully established specimen displays the elegant trailing habit that has made Euphorbia knuthii one of the most distinctive and conversation-worthy caudiciform euphorbias in cultivation.
