Euphorbia ingens, commonly known as the Candelabra Tree, Cowboy Cactus, or Naboom, is a striking, tree-like succulent native to the arid regions of Southern Africa. While it mimics a cactus with its columnar, four-lobed stems and vertical growth, it is technically a succulent in the Euphorbiaceae family.
APPEARANCES and CHARACTERISTICS
- Appearance: Features dark green stems that branch out as the plant matures, creating a distinctive silhouette similar to a multi-armed candelabra.
- Size: In its natural habitat, it can tower up to 30–40 feet tall, while indoor container plants typically reach 8–10 feet.
- Toxicity: Contains a milky white latex sap that is highly toxic and a severe irritant to skin and eyes; it can cause blindness upon contact.
- Flowers & Fruit: Produces small, greenish-yellow flowers in fall and winter, which develop into round, reddish-purple fruit.
CARE and GROWING CONDITIONS
- Light: Requires bright, direct sunlight for several hours a day. Insufficient light can lead to "etiolation" (stretched, thin growth) .
- Watering: Drought-tolerant but needs thorough watering once the soil is completely dry.
- Summer: Roughly once a week or every 2–3 weeks depending on heat.
- Winter: Reduce significantly to once every month or two during dormancy.
- Soil: Must be planted in well-draining, gritty soil (like a cactus or succulent mix) to prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Prefers warm environments and is not frost-hardy; it should be protected or moved indoors if temperatures drop below 35°F.
