Euphorbia horwoodii is a rare and unique succulent species native to Somalia, distinguished by its remarkable transformation from a spherical juvenile plant to a sparsely branched shrub. Like all euphorbias, it contains a toxic, milky white sap. The plant is prized by collectors, especially the rare crested (or f. cristata) form, which is often grafted for stability.

Appearance:

  • Crested Growth: This form exhibits fasciation, a mutation that causes the plant to grow in a broad, fan-shaped or ribbon-like manner, rather than the typical cylindrical stem shape.
  • Color and Texture: The stems are a beautiful greyish-blue and olive green, often with zig-zag bands.
  • Flowers: It can produce small, yellowish flowers.
  • Size: It is generally a slow-growing and long-lived plant.

Care and Cultivation:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or partial sun. Too much direct sunlight can cause sunburn.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is a common cause of issues like root rot. Reduce watering significantly during the winter dormant period.
  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent potting mix amended with sand or perlite.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm conditions and should be protected from frost. Handles a range of temperatures but keep it above 13° C (55° F).
  • Dormancy: Enters a dormant phase during winter, requiring less water.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated by cuttings or grafting.
  • Handling: Be cautious when handling this plant, as its milky white sap (latex) can be irritating.

Origin:

  • Native Habitat: The standard species Euphorbia horwoodii is native to Somalia.
  • Crested Form: The crested form is a cultivated variety, often produced in nurseries.

Special Note:

  • Rarity and Collector's Item: The unique crested form makes it highly sought after by collectors. It is often described as a "living sculpture".
  • Potential for Grafting: The crested form is often grafted onto a base of another plant, such as Euphorbia neriifolia.
