Euphorbia hedyotoides is a rare, root-succulent deciduous shrub endemic to Southern Madagascar, prized by collectors and bonsai enthusiasts for its architectural form and woody, branching stems. It develops a large, intricate underground caudex (swollen base) to store water.

  • Appearance: The plant has slender, woody stems that can grow up to 5 feet tall and dark green, non-succulent leaves which it drops during dormancy. It produces small, inconspicuous dull red or yellow flowers. The main feature is its large, often hidden, underground caudex, which can be raised above the soil line by growers to achieve a "natural bonsai" look.
  • Habitat and Growth: It is found in the dry forests and shrublands of South and South-West Madagascar. It is a summer grower that is threatened by habitat loss in its native range.
  • Light: Prefers bright light to full sun. When acclimating a plant whose caudex was previously underground, care should be taken to protect the exposed part from sunburn.
  • Watering: Requires very well-draining soil and is drought-tolerant. Water sparingly during the summer growing months, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, it should be kept quite dry. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Temperature: Thrives in warm temperatures and needs moderate winter temperatures, preferably above 50°F (10°C).
  • Soil: A gritty, well-draining cactus/succulent potting mix is essential.
  • Toxicity: Like other euphorbias, it produces a milky white sap (latex) that is an irritant to skin and eyes and is poisonous if ingested. Handle with care and keep out of reach of children and pets.
