🌵
Euphorbia guillauminiana is an extraordinary and highly sought-after Madagascan Euphorbia, native to the island's far north and prized by collectors for its remarkable combination of a thick, sculptural trunk, fierce pale spines, and compact crowns of broad green leaves. Even among Madagascar's famously eccentric Euphorbias, this species is unmistakable. With age, the pale, heavily textured stems develop an almost armored appearance, while fresh foliage emerges in dense rosettes at the growing tips—a striking contrast between formidable spination and lush tropical growth.
This exact specimen is especially beautiful. Its established central trunk divides into a wonderfully balanced, multi-headed crown, with mature branching, spectacular long ivory-colored spines, and active leafy growth across the tips. At approximately 7" tall above the soil line and 6.5" across, it already has the architecture and character of a much older collector plant. We have only one, and it is precisely the kind of rare Madagascan specimen that is increasingly difficult to replace once it leaves the collection.
Care Instructions
☀️ Light
Bright light to partial or full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and robust spination, but acclimate gradually to intense direct sun to prevent scorching, particularly after shipping or during seasonal changes.
💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry well between waterings. Reduce watering substantially when the plant slows or enters dormancy. Never allow the roots to remain continuously wet.
🪨 Soil
Requires a very fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix with excellent aeration. A substantial proportion of pumice, lava rock, grit, or similar inorganic material is ideal.
🌡️ Temperature
Warm-growing and frost-sensitive. Protect from freezing temperatures and prolonged cold, especially when the soil is damp.
🌬️ Humidity
Prefers good air circulation and generally dry conditions. Avoid prolonged cool, damp conditions.
📈 Growth Habit
A pachycaul, branching Madagascan Euphorbia that develops a thickened, heavily armed trunk and stout branches terminating in leafy crowns. Mature specimens become increasingly sculptural as the trunk thickens and branching develops, creating the compact, almost tree-like architecture for which the species is prized.
✍️ Special Note
Like all Euphorbias, this plant contains a milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Its long, rigid spines also demand careful handling when repotting or moving the plant.

Collector Notes
Euphorbia guillauminiana is one of the remarkable endemic Euphorbias of northern Madagascar, a region whose geographic isolation and highly specialized habitats have produced an extraordinary concentration of unusual succulent flora. The species is immediately distinguished by its stout pachycaul structure and exceptionally prominent spination, with the pale trunk becoming increasingly textured and armored as old leaf bases and spine-bearing structures accumulate.
The contrast is what makes the plant so extraordinary. From that formidable framework of pale, heavily armed stems emerge surprisingly broad, fresh green leaves concentrated near the growing tips. As the plant develops additional branches, each terminates in its own leafy crown, producing a miniature tree-like silhouette that changes dramatically between active growth and periods when foliage is reduced.
Older, well-developed specimens are particularly desirable because the character collectors prize in E. guillauminiana takes time to develop. The trunk thickens, the surface becomes increasingly rugged, the pale spines become a dominant architectural feature, and branching transforms a young plant into a complex three-dimensional specimen.
This exact plant is already beautifully on its way. Its multiple established growing points, substantial trunk, dense ivory spination, and compact 7" × 6.5" proportions give it tremendous presence despite its manageable size. For a collector building a serious representation of Madagascar's extraordinary Euphorbia flora, Euphorbia guillauminiana is one of those species that needs very little embellishment—the plant itself is the event.
