Euphorbia greenwayi is a striking and relatively uncommon East African Euphorbia prized for its sculptural branching habit, blue-green coloration, and formidable dark spination. Native to Tanzania, the species develops angular, succulent stems whose strongly defined margins are armed with paired spines, creating an architectural silhouette that becomes increasingly interesting as the plant matures and branches.

This exact specimen has tremendous character. Multiple blue-green branches rise from an established, woody central structure, with older growth contrasting beautifully against the fresh glaucous stems above. Particularly handsome are the nearly black to reddish-brown spines tracing the margins of the upper branches. At approximately 6" tall, this is a compact specimen, but one that already displays the rugged, miniature-tree architecture that makes mature Euphorbia greenwayi so appealing.

Care Instructions

☀️ Light
Bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth, good stem coloration, and strong spine development. Gradually acclimate to intense direct sunlight, particularly after shipping.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry well between waterings. Reduce watering substantially during cooler periods or when the plant is dormant. Avoid prolonged moisture around the roots.

🪨 Soil
Requires a very fast-draining, mineral-rich succulent mix with excellent aeration. A generous proportion of pumice, lava rock, coarse grit, or similar inorganic material is recommended.

🌡️ Temperature
Warm-growing and frost-sensitive. Protect from freezing temperatures and prolonged cold, particularly when the soil is damp.

🌬️ Humidity
Prefers relatively dry conditions with excellent air circulation. Avoid prolonged combinations of cool temperatures and high humidity.

📈 Growth Habit
An upright, branching succulent Euphorbia that develops angular, spine-lined stems and increasingly complex architecture with age. Older portions can become woody and trunk-like while newer blue-green branches continue developing above.

✍️ Special Note
Like all Euphorbias, this plant contains milky latex sap that can irritate skin and eyes and is toxic if ingested. Its substantial paired spines also require careful handling when repotting or moving the plant.

Collector Notes

Euphorbia greenwayi is an East African species native to Tanzania, part of a remarkable assemblage of highly architectural succulent Euphorbias found in the region. It remains considerably less familiar in cultivation than many of the commonly encountered African columnar Euphorbias, making established specimens particularly interesting to collectors.

Its beauty comes from contrast. The succulent stems have a cool blue-green to glaucous cast, while their sharply defined margins are punctuated by dark paired spines. As the plant ages, older stem tissue becomes woody and weathered, providing an entirely different texture and color beneath the younger growth.

That aging process can transform the plant dramatically. Rather than remaining simply a collection of succulent stems, an established E. greenwayi begins to acquire something approaching the architecture of a miniature tree: an old central framework supporting successive generations of branching growth.

This exact specimen is already well along that path. The woody central section records earlier growth while multiple newer branches emerge around and above it, including several exceptionally attractive blue-green upper stems edged in dark spines. At only approximately 6" tall, it packs an unusual amount of maturity and botanical character into a remarkably compact plant—a beautifully aged Tanzanian Euphorbia that should become increasingly sculptural with time.
